Good taste is timeless. But what was tasteful in 1985 may not be timeless today. Although white is timeless, white appliances look very 80s right now, according to Dave Burcher
and Michael Markoe of In House Kitchen Bath Home in the N.Y. Design Center. A soft white quartz or engineered stone countertop (such as CaesarStone) is very "now" and will look stylish for many more years, but an all-white laminate countertop isn't and won't, they said.
Burcher and Markoe noted that the two most important trends in kitchens and baths today relate to lighting and high tech/electronics. Lighting in the kitchen and bathroom refers to ceiling lights, task lights, access lights, even faucet lights, such as LED faucets. In the high tech and electronics arena, they pointed out interest in integrated screens for television behind mirrors and glass doors; audio speakers built into walls and bathroom tiles; remote controls for bath and kitchen fixtures, including remote computerized controls that let the user start the oven from the office. Housing Market Business Conditions
The latest American Institute of Architects
(AIA) Home Design Trends Survey, which focused on overall home layout and use in the first quarter of 2009, reported index scores for specific residential segments. Kitchen and bath remodeling scored 28 and additions/alterations scored 26. The index score is computed as the percentage of respondents reporting improving minus the percentage reporting weakening conditions.
The study revealed a growing demand for smaller sized homes, including an adjustment in the volume of living space with a preference for lower ceilings and a diminished interest in two-story foyers. Property upgrades, such as finished attics and basements, outdoor living enhancements and blended indoor/outdoor features, were cited as popular with households trying to maximize their usable space. Accessibility within the home continues to be a concern, especially for an aging U.S. population, the study said. Business conditions for residential architects remain weak, but appear to be stabilizing with the first uptick in billings since the second quarter of 2007, according to the survey,
which is conducted quarterly with a panel of 500 architecture firms that concentrate their practice in the residential sector.
