GE universal kitchen

Eight Tips For A Universal Design Kitchen

Although every individual has a unique profile consisting of height, age, ability, strengths, weaknesses and preferences, most homes are designed to fit a "standard" person. As a result, many people struggle to reach or operate sink fixtures, cabinets and appliances. According to GE, the time has come for kitchens and homes that fit the real needs of real people - needs that will change over time.
Here are eight ways to incorporate universal design in the kitchen:

  •  A convenient pull-out counter beneath a built-in oven allows for easy transfer of dishes.
  • A rolling cart moves around the kitchen to assist in food preparation, serving, or cleanup.
  • A 9-inch wood kickplate elevates the dishwasher to reduce bending and improve access for the mobility-challenged.
  • An adjustable-height sink raises and lowers at the push of a button and is loaded with easy-access features.
  • Roll-out shelves make it easier to see and reach items stored in lower cabinets.
  • Swiveling cabinet doors under the cooktop fold out of the way, providing valuable knee space.
  • A contrasting tile border aids those with limited eyesight and adds visual appeal.
  • A raised, front-loading washer and dryer set makes doing laundry easier for those in wheelchairs.
