It’s that time of year. Temperatures are starting to climb. Homeowners are watering their lawns and gardens. Children are splashing in backyard pools. Birds are flapping around in birdbaths. But also, we hear news reports about droughts and wildfires and the need to conserve water.
At both the Kitchen/Bath Industry Show and the International Builders Show this year, a number of manufacturers talked about their water conservation efforts relating to the water required to flush a toilet and the water that flows from showerheads and faucets. For example, TOTO
announced that it will introduce nine 1.28 gallon-per-flush high-efficiency toilets to the market in 2007. The 1.28 gpf toilets will consume 20% less water than the standard 1.6 gpf toilet, the company said. The new toilets, featuring TOTO’s new E-Max flushing technology, are gravity fed, single-flush models that use a standard trip lever. SFA Saniflo
said its one-piece, wall-hung Sanistar macerating toilet system (pictured) uses only 1.1 gallons per flush, instead of the standard 1.6 gpf. A macerator inside the fixture disposes of the waste from the toilet and can also pump water away from a nearby hand basin. The system uses a one-inch copper or plastic discharge pipe to pump effluent nine feet vertically, 100 feet horizontally, or a combination of both.
Sloan Flushmate, a division of Sloan Valve Co., offers single-flush one-gallon-per-flush pressure-assist technology that meets the LEED projects certification and WaterSense requirements.
Delta’s showerheads featuring H20 kinetic technology provide water flow of 1.6 gallons per minute vs. the typical 2.5 gpm. The water is oscillated and the system controls the size of the water drops and how hard and fast they flow.
Alsons’ In2ition water-amplifying showerhead uses Fluidics spray technology, which can save as much as 25%-30% of hot water. It can function as a showerhead or hand-held shower. Water and energy efficiency and the entire Green movement will continue to garner attention from the industry, government bodies and consumers.
