In these frightening days of Category 5 hurricanes, terrible tragedies such as the mining accident and the bridge collapse, and the continuing horrors of war, it can be comforting to think back to the “good old days.” That’s when many of us were younger, life was simpler and perhaps we felt a bit more safe and secure. We’ve often heard talk about the bathroom as a retreat, a safe haven. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but there has been a surge in popularity of “Old World” styling, particularly European-influenced designs, especially for bathrooms, according to
Moen. Here is Moen’s advice on how to bring Old World charm to any bathroom. • Invest in architectural salvage. Shop online for vendors reselling knobs and knick-knacks. Visit flea markets for unique vanities and bowl sinks, or for old dressers and vanities that can be converted into bases for vessels.
•Paint with vibrant, bold colors. They worked in Colonial Williamsburg. • Partner new technology with the Old World look. A wall-mount faucet with traditional two-handle styling and an Old World finish, such as oil-rubbed or antique bronze, antique nickel or wrought iron, can be paired with a bowl-shaped vessel sink. • Add wall lighting. An antique light fixture or a wall sconce with warm incandescent lighting can create a nostalgic look. Install a dimmer for the perfect amount of light for any activity.
• Install trim. Ornate crown moulding around the ceiling and quality trim at the base provide a clean break between walls, ceilings and floors for a dramatic look. • Decorate with framed vintage photos. Or frame black and white family photos. Hang wood-framed mirrors. Brush an aging glaze into the decorative edges or corners of new frames to give them the right look, according to Leslie Segrete, designer and carpenter for TV shows “While You Were Out” and “
Trading Spaces.” — Moen |

In conjunction with the launch of the “Dialogue on Design” series, Davis & Warshow has established a companion website, www.dialogueondesign.com
