When I last wrote you, there were a few bumps that had to be smoothed out to keep my bathroom remodeling project moving along to a timely completion. These bumps had prevented the project from being done in just one week, so at the close of week one, much remained to be done — by both the contractor and myself.

Weekend Warrior

Because the contractor didn’t work on the weekend, I used these two days to buy a replacement faucet and paint the bathroom. As for the faucet, I lucked out by finding the same model I’d wanted but at a smaller width (4 inches, rather than 8 inches).

Also, while I was at the Big Box retail store, I went over to the department where I’d ordered my custom vanity top. I queried the salesperson about why the sink failed to come with an overflow hole. He said I should call the company directly and request a replacement, then noted I should figure on waiting at least a month for it to come in. After a brief consideration, I decided to live with the top I had because I didn’t want to wait another month to finish this project.

My time at the retailer was done, so home I went to help my lady friend paint the bathroom and install new closet shelves. It was a lot of work, but it came out great. By Sunday night I was both sore and excited — thinking about the workers coming back Monday morning.

I also needed to tell them about another small bump — specifically, several areas on the floor and wall tiles that needed more grout in them to create a uniform appearance among the grout lines and eliminate sharp edges.

Day 6

The worker and foreman were only there for part of Day 6, but they were able to install the faucet, an entrance door strip (between the tile and carpet), a temporary shower rod/curtain and all the wood trim from the floor and closet.

The latter two things were installed only after the worker set/caulked the vanity top and filled in the low grout lines with more grout. Because the grout was wet, the worker could do no more that day.

Before he left, I looked closely at all the floor and wall tiles and noticed that several tiles at the back of the shower were slightly uneven, protruding outward more than those on top. I felt now was the time to address this problem so I asked him why the tiles were uneven.

He explained that a flange at the top of the base and a protruding stud made it difficult to get all the tiles completely aligned. I told him I wasn’t happy with how they looked. We discussed the matter and they agreed to replace the tiles (six in total) the next day if I’d buy them. The pointed out that However, this would delay the finishing of the bathroom at least another day.

So be it. I went to a nearby distribution center that night and bought the tiles.

But then yet another bump in the road appeared: The faucet leaked a bit that night.
